Beans – by Tracey Wheeler

Beans are small but so under underrated. Not only great for vegetarians but also for everyone wanting a balanced diet.

They are called legumes and pulses but beans are essentially seeds that come from the pods of different types of plants. They are packed with protein, some carbohydrate and low in fat. The biggest factor in bean consumption is the fibre factor. The fibre and protein in beans keeps us satisfied for long periods of times. Due to this, beans can also be helpful in lowering cholesterol, preventing heart disease and detoxification. The fibre helps to keep blood sugar levels low.

Other health benefits of beans are good levels of antioxidants which help with the detoxifying process. Beans also contain folic acid and B6.

Beans are super versatile. How do you like to enjoy yours?

My favourite is a mixed salad of grated carrot, beetroot, chickpeas and sprinkled with balsamic vinegar and feta. It couldn’t be easier and tastes delicious.

Other ways to enjoy beans are:

Hummus

Added to soups

Added to salads

Added to tacos
