Spirulina, Chlorella, Alfalfa: do you know the difference? These grasses and algaes are often added to smoothies and vitamins nowdays. They have many health claims but can you tell the difference about what each one offers health wise? Below is a small breakdown to help you.

Alfalfa:

This is a grass which is rejuvenating. It has all the known vitamins and contains four times more Vitamin C than citrus fruit. It also has a very high calcium level, great for digestive enzymes, amino acids and chlorophyll. This grass is often used for detoxifying and assisting the liver. It also helps with digestion and boosting the immune system.

Wheatgrass:

Wheatgrass on it’s own is almost indigestible so it needs to be juiced to gain the nutrition content. Otherwise it is usually available in tablet or powder form. This grass has high levels of calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc. It is helpful for immunity, digestion and high enzyme content.

Spirulina:

This is an algae and has one of the highest protein contents for a natural food. The protein content is 60 to 70 percent in comparison to meat which only has 23 percent. It has also been suggested that it can help with blood sugar levels and cravings.

Chlorella:

This is an algae from fresh water. It is high in protein, vitamin B12, zinc, iron and chlorophyll. It helps by lifting your immune system and can possibly reduce cholesterol.

I like to enjoy different grasses and algae by adding them to my smoothies or sprinkling over salads. How do you like to enjoy them?
