The # 1 job of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is to keep your physical body alive. Your physical survival cannot happen in the absence of safety.

With many (if not most) chronic conditions and mental health issues emerging from dysregulation of the nervous system, one could argue that the root cause of all mental health struggles is a nervous system that doesn’t FEEL safe.

Which is why you could be living in a safe environment, but if you don’t feel safe (for whatever reason) in that environment, the nervous system will get caught in the physiology and psychology survival.

When the nervous system is in survival mode, everything else is de-prioritised and it becomes neurologically impossible to access optimal states of health and wellbeing.

Creating a felt-sense of safety in yourself and/or your clients leads to radical shifts in wellbeing.

At a nervous system level, safety is about feeling safe – not just being safe.

You may be free of an actual physical threat to your survival, but why is it that your nervous system is out of whack?

Yes, you might BE safe, but do you FEEL safe?

Does your internal felt experience mirror your external lived experience?

Keep in mind that your autonomic nervous system hasn’t evolved to distinguish between the lack of ACTUAL safety which you might experience if you were being chased by a wild animal, or the PERCEIVED lack of safety that the nervous system may experience as a result of being yelled at, ridiculed or ignored.

The way out of mental health struggles and chronic health conditions is through nervous system wellbeing. The nervous system cannot regulate without a FELT-SENSE of safety.

Learning and applying the tools and practices to create a felt-sense of safety is commonly overlooked, yet it is pivotal to your wellbeing (and to the wellbeing of your clients).
