‘BEING IN YOUR BODY’ – Trauma Aware Yoga & Mindful Movement 4 week courses with Jessica Devi.
This course is open to anyone who may appreciate a practice that is intentionally designed to create a deeper connection with your body.
Through the use of invitational language, the noticing of sensation in your body, plenty of variations and the choice to move in a way that feels most helpful for you, these classes can be a useful tool for healing, confidence and empowerment.
All levels of experience, sizes and abilities are welcome in these classes.
Trauma experts agree that virtually every person has experienced some degree of trauma in their lives. For some the trauma has been truly shattering, while for others, the impact or severity has been milder. Often times we do not even realise certain events or experiences in our lives may have led to beliefs or patterns we have become stuck in.
Welcoming ourselves into the present moment, practicing being in our bodies and listening to the sensations we are experiencing can be a helpful way to move forward.
Without a deep anchor in ourselves and a feeling of connection to our body we can feel as though we are adrift. This can leave us vulnerable to discomfort or distress, which may arise unexpectedly. Trauma Aware Yoga & Mindful Movement practices can be a supportive and powerful body-based technique for healing.
Healing is a process that encourages self inquiry, asks us to believe in our capacity and in the potential we have to move forward in our lives in a positive and life affirming way.
Trauma Sensitive Yoga has been researched and proven to have remarkable effects on people struggling with the effects of trauma and/or those who have experienced particularly painful, difficult or overwhelming times in their lives. However, you do not need to identify as a survivor of trauma to receive benefit from this way of practicing.
A Trauma Aware Yoga & Mindful Movement session is invitational – the teacher does not issue orders but rather invites you to try a variety of shapes, offering plenty of alternatives and variations for you to choose from. You are invited to be fully in charge of how you choose to move your body at all times during the session.
In a Trauma Aware class the choices you make for yourself are always celebrated and you are always in control of your own practice. There are no physical assists and everything is optional.
The objective of Trauma Sensitive/Trauma Aware Yoga is not to dredge up emotion or memory, but instead to support you to have a heightened sense of physical awareness, to reconnect to your body and to practice choosing what feels most useful for you. These simple practices can have profound effects on all people, including (but not limited to) those living with the effects of trauma.
Trauma and painful experiences can create emotional and physical imprints in our bodies. As Bessel Van der Kolk (an expert in Trauma) explains, “ Unresolved emotional trauma creates ‘issues in our tissues’, manifesting as physical symptoms such as migraines, nervous ticks, clenched shoulders/neck/jaw, a sunken chest, and a heavy heart. The physical body can slowly become the enemy. Core functions of sleep, digestion, breathing, and chemical/hormone balance may become disrupted. Individuals may also feel shame or become self-consciousness as they feel they overreact to physical or emotional cues from the world around them.”
The moment a person experiences a trauma or goes through a time of deep pain, emotional, physical or mental difficulty their body automatically makes a decision to protect itself. This decision can result in a fight, flight, or freeze response. We can become ‘locked’ in this type of nervous system reaction as trauma can affect the insula, a part of your brain that registers what is happening with your body. This can alter your ability to experience joy, love, happiness and knowing what your body is physically doing. Additionally, trauma can affect your pre-frontal cortex, which assists in self-regulation.
After experiencing trauma, an individual may feel lost or as though they cannot rely on themselves to become reoriented.
This is a feeling that must come from within.
By accessing those places in your body and subconscious that can’t be easily accessed with mind-based therapies, yoga can create a freedom from the influence of past experiences. It can support you to move into a future where you are able to connect with yourself and others, feel more embodied, more alive and more aligned with what is true for you.
A trauma-sensitive yoga approach can increase your connection with your breath, enabling your brain to become less active, and relaxation to begin. Yoga can rebuild connections with both your insula and your prefrontal cortex, strengthening your mind-body connection. The practice can support you to regain a sense of control and ownership over your body and your experiences.
Once the basics of posture and breath become familiar you may experience a feeling of empowerment, regain or increase your ability to self-regulate and begin to find your unique pathway to peace. And while yoga alone doesn’t heal the effects of trauma or change past events, it can act as a crucial ally in bringing us home to ourselves and embracing the present moment for whatever it may bring.
These classes will run in 4 week blocks. You are welcome to come to as many blocks as you choose but each 4 week block will become a closed group once it begins (no casuals) to create a sense of safety and familiarity. The classes will be limited to 12 people per block.
A 4 week block of classes costs $60.
The class is held in Browns Bay at YOGA WITHIN – 81 Clyde Rd, Browns Bay and meets on Mondays from 11:15am-12:15pm.
PLEASE NOTE: These classes do not qualify for ACC funding as there is only one teacher present and no therapist on-site.

** You are welcome to attend as many blocks as you choose. In order to create a safe and familiar environment, each block will be closed once it begins, Each block of 4 classes costs $60.
