Snacking – by Tracey Wheeler

This can be a confusing topic. Do you snack during the day? Are you afraid of snacking? Do you get confused about what to eat for a snack?

So many people eat in different ways these days. I meet with people who eat every two hours and some people have three meals per day and some have meals plus snacks. Which is right?

The answer is whichever is right for you.

Your overall caloric intake of the day can be split into many ways. Small meals with snacks, larger meals with no snacks or regular intake of food. One thing I will say is that the body loves consistency and rhythm. It doesn’t like surprises. Everything in nature has a rhythm to it and our bodies are no different. The important thing is to get in tune with your body and work out what work best for your digestion.

Ideally you’d want to choose something that will fill the gap and settle you but doesn’t need to take the place of a meal. This can be as simple as fruit, nuts, raw vegetables or smoothies. Think about your overall daily intake and what nutrients would add more value. Missing a few vegetables in your day? Then add some raw options such as capsicum or cucumber as a snack. Have a sweet treat but don’t want to have a late sugar rush? Then include a raw energy ball into your day.

Like most things it’s all about balance and finding the right balance in your diet.

Below is one of my favourite go-to snacks when I am craving something a little sweet.

Choc and coconut balls

2 cups dates

2 cups boiling water

2 cups rolled oats

2 cups coconut

½ cup cocoa

1 ½ cups sultanas or cranberries

1 cup walnuts

1 TBspn vanilla essence

Take dates and cover with water and leave for 30min till plump. Place in blender and blend till it becomes a paste. Add dry ingredients and stir to combine. Take tablespoon size amounts and roll into balls. Sprinkle to cover with coconut. Store in fridge or freezer.

You can play around with this recipe and change the types of fruits or nuts to what you have available or what you feel like.
